Accountants pressed on ethical behavior

Accountant General, Chrighton Chimombo, has urged accountants in the public service to properly manage finances and resources as the profession has become more complex and challenging due to expanded responsibilities.

Chimombo was speaking during a ceremony to mark closure of a six-month course for accountants held at the Staff Development Institute (SDI) in Mpemba, Blantyre.

The course attracted 30 participants.

“Financial resources are paramount in all organisations, irrespective of size and line of business. Therefore, prudent management of financial resources is key to the success of the operations of an organisation,” Chimombo said.

SDI staff member, Anderson Msonthi, said they will continue offering courses to the public service in an effort to prevent recurrence of incidents like the Cashgate scandal and other such cases of mismanagement of funds.

“It is an open secret that the public has lost trust in its officers, who work in the accounting sections of government ministries and departments as they have lost integrity and work ethics,” Msonthi said.

He said this is why the course focused on government accounting, cost accounting, principles of accounting, economics, auditing, taxation, business law, communication, ICT and Ifmis, among other areas.

The objective of the course was to equip the participants with supervisory skills to enable them efficiently manage duties under their various roles.
