KAPITO—Be open

Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) has asked the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) to be open in divulging information related to fuel price market trends.

This was said on the sidelines of media training on petroleum pricing mechanism the consumer-rights body organised in Mzuzu last week.

Cama Executive Director, John Katipo, said Mera was too technical when disseminating information to the public.

“They (Mera) believe that what they have as press releases would be able to answer issues that people are talking about. We have noted that sometimes they do release press statements that are even too technical,” he said.

Kapito urged journalists to be conversant with the petroleum products pricing mechanism which in many cases, causes confusions among consumers.

In an interview, Mera Public Relations Manager, Fitina Khonje, said the authority was open to new ideas and suggestions.

“We are here because of the consumers; so, we are open to suggestions on how we can be good at communication,” Khonje said.

One of the facilitators, Grey Mang’anda, challenged journalists to continue systematically investigating issues that affect the citizenry.

“Continue investigating issues that are affecting the citizenry,” Mang’anda said.

At least twenty five journalists attended the workshop.
