Blantyre City Council looking for public-private partners

THE Blantyre City Council (BCC) says it is looking for public-private partners (PPPs) to help it implement some of its projects it has lined up for the 2017/18 financial year.

This was said last week when BCC presented a K2.8 billion budget to its residents. The 2017/18 budget is slightly higher than last year’s.

BCC Finance Chairman, Songwe Kabaghe, said the council has lined up a number of projects, and need PPPs to come in and implement the plans.

“As a council, we do not have adequate financing and we are calling upon other players, especially PPPs, to partner with us in implementing some of the projects,” he said.

Kabaghe highlighted the construction of the city’s car park as one area that needs local investors to come in. “As you know, the problem of car parking areas in Blantyre is huge. We, therefore, have plans to construct a car park and this requires huge financing, hence we would want other players to invest in the project,” he said.

Apart from the car park, Kabaghe said there are projects such as waste to energy, five star hotel construction, and introduction of 31 city clocks. Kabaghe said the 31 city clocks project is expected to be completed by May 2017.

BCC Mayor, Wild Ndipo, said they would like to take the city back to its people. He said already, the council has started finishing up projects that were not completed in the last budget.

“We have started with projects that were not completed last year and these are mainly roads projects. As you know the council has been upgrading most roads and what lacked is the finishing in terms of shoulders and drainage. This where we have started from,” Ndipo said.

He, however, admitted that the council is facing financial challenges; hence it is exploring other avenues to boost its revenue collection.
