Chamber to elect new leaders Wednesday

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) members are today expected to elect new leadership during an Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for Chamber of Commerce premises in the Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre.

A new face is expected to take up the office of president for the grouping as the constitution bars incumbent President, Karl Chokoto, from standing for a second term.

MCCCI Constitution bars members from serving in the council for four consecutive years. Chokotho, who took over leadership from Newton Kambala in April 2016, has served his four years; two as councillor and the other two years as president.

MCCCI Chief Executive Officer, Chancellor Kaferapanjira, Tuesday confirmed that Chokotho is not eligible for re-election.

“We invited interest from members to fill the positions of president and vice president and the period for expressing interest to stand elapsed on March 31. We have one candidate for the position of president and one for vice president, to be confirmed at the AGM,” Kaferapanjira said, but could not be drawn to reveal identities of the individuals.

MCCCI has been in the forefront of Malawi’s private sector development efforts for the past 100 years. Established in 1892, the first chamber organisation operated as Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce to reflect the predominant focus of the economy on agriculture production.

MCCCI is a partnership of enterprises and associations representing all sectors of the economy of Malawi and its commitment is to achieve Malawi’s socio-economic development through joint action and enlightened dialogue, among private sector members and constituencies.
