KAPITO—We need to reject such products

Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has recalled Velvex hand sanitisers from the local market after it was banned in Kenya where it is manufactured.

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has recalled the brand and 29 others from the country’s markets for non-compliance with the minimum alcohol requirement and labeling standards.

According to a statement from CFTC signed by its Executive Director, James Kaphale, the commission is this week inspecting markets to flush out the banned products.

The commission has further commanded local traders to recall the products and refund consumers who bought them or risk facing the law.

“The commission is advising consumers to critically check material information on hand sanitisers before purchasing or using them,” the statement reads in part.

Consumers Association of Malawi, (Cama) has since called for an investigation into the process by which the product was allowed into the country without being tested.

Cama Executive Director, John Kapito, said in an interview yesterday that the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is supposed to vet the products before entering the country.

“Before the goods are cleared and people pay duty, we need to make sure that they are vetted and rejected ones can be taken back before they penetrate and spread to the market,” Kapito said.

MBS announced when hand sanitisers tar ted flooding the market that it will start certifying the products.

The fast spread of coronavirus has seen a surge in production, distribution and use of hand sanitisers which is recommended for prevention.
