The Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) has finished drafting strategies that would see the transformation of digital technologies in the country for both public and the private sectors.

This was said yesterday during a press briefing in Blantyre, where the commission and the Ministry of Information gave an update on the project.

The strategies are National Broadband Strategy, Digital Government Strategy and Cybersecurity Strategy which concentrate on ironing out challenges in the Information and Communications Technology sector.

PPPC Chief Executive Officer Patrick Kabambe said the commission was engaging the Ministry of Information and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) to publish and launch the strategies.

“The Digital Malawi Project will require investment. Therefore, we are looking at various components and stakeholders so we are putting investors in different areas and, by the end of the project, there will be a massive transformation of digital technologies,” Kabambe said.

The project, among other things, will connect all government systems and turn transactions to focus on digital operations.

Ministry of Information Principal Secretary Francis Bisika said the project is also targeting people who are living in remotest areas.

“Apart from negotiating with mobile operators to reduce some charges which hinder digital transformation, we will also make available alternatives so that people can get alternative source of data apart from mobile operators,” he said.

The Government of Malawi is, with funds from International Development Association of the World Bank, implementing the project on a credit facility of $72.4 million (K57 billion).
