MORTOO— We want to promote accountability

The European Union (EU) has partenered the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam) in training accounting students from various colleges across the country.

The two institutions conducted debates on entrepreneurial skills for college students in Mzuzu on Wednesday.

Speaking during the debate, EU Program Manager for Public Financial Management, Janet Mortoo, said the organisation is working towards capacity building and promoting accountability among accounting professionals.

“We want to promote accountability, transparency and integrity among accountants,” Mortoo said.

Meanwhile, the EU has expressed satisfaction on progress of the competition.

ICAM Director of Education and Training, Ruth Mdala, said the institute has noted a gap among some professionals.

“If accountants are to able to articulate issues to investors and business owners, they need to have technical skills.

“At the end, we believe that we will be producing students who would be able to survive in the job market and businesses,” Mdala said.

Mzuzu Technical College emerged winners of the debate and has qualified for the semi-finals to be held in Lilongwe in May 2019.
