Firm for partnership in agri revitalisation
Growth prospects for the agriculture sector, Malawi economy’s mainstay, remains murky as it continues facing myriad challenges which require urgent attention and collaborative effort, experts have said.
The challenges include low agricultural productivity, resulting from poor access, to agricultural technologies such as quality seed, poor management of land and water as well as weather and economic shocks.
But speaking at joint Alliance for Green Revolution Africa (Agra) and Ifad knowledge management validation workshop recently, Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (Aswap) Coordinator at the Ministry of Agriculture, Henry Msatilumo, said various intervention are being deployed to address the woes.
“It is our concern that despite playing this pivotal role in our livelihood, agriculture continues to face many challenges which limit its potential to help us meet our aspiration for a food secure nation,” Msatilumo said.
He said, among other things, the ministry is working with stakeholders to ensure the country has a stable seed production system where the market would have early generating and drought resistant seeds for variety crops.
He said blueprints like the National Agriculture Investment Plan were recently coined to facilitate creation of an environment where players join hands in addressing the bottlenecks.
Agra Associate Programme Officer Mcloud Kayira said various interventions by stakeholders, however, points to a brighter future for the sector.
“We look forward to incorporating the private sector in public programmes which is critical in sustaining the gains that are achieved in the agriculture sector,” he said.
