One of the country’s high street banks, First Capital Bank, has donated K8.3 million to 355 students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences.

The students were on the verge of withdrawing from studies due to financial constraints.

The gesture comes after The Daily Times reported that some students at the university were failing to access examination results due to tuition balances.

Speaking during the official cheque handover ceremony in Blantyre over the weekend, FCB Deputy Chief Executive Officer Agness Jazza said education was among the three pillars of their focus.

“We believe quality education is the only way of developing competitive human capital which is key in creating a thriving economy. We have confidence that students benefitting through our partnership with Mubas will not only succeed in their personal lives, but also positively contribute to the attainment of national goals,” she said.

Mubas Vice Chancellor Nancy Chitera thanked the bank for the gesture, saying without the help, the students’ studies would have been delayed by a year.

Students Representative Council Financial Controller Noah Chadza expressed happiness with the donation.

Apart from the support, through its corporate social initiatives, the bank also runs a Graduate Trainee Programme which, through an annual selection process, employs students every year.
