The Government has urged tourism players to improve standards of services and products.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Ken Ndala, made the call during an interface with some tourism players and prospective investors in Blantyre on Thursday.

“To a certain extent, we are impressed but there are areas which we need to improve on in terms of providing actual products,” he said.

Ndala said the ministry organised the meeting to sensitise tourism operators and promoters on guidelines of the sector.

The indaba also created a platform for government officials, tourism players and prospective investors to share expectations and experiences.

Ndala said the ministry is using the tourism levy to participate in various tourism marketing activities.

One of the participants, Harry Mtuwa, Proprietor of Kameza Lodge, said the meeting was important as stakeholders shared notes on improving the sector.

“It is important that we discuss our expectations and what the government has in stock for us. Business is doing okay but we are facing a number of challenges including electricity blackouts,” he said.

Speaking during the Blantyre Tourism Street Carnival, Minister of trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa, said the government has drafted the Domestic Marketing Strategy which seeks to promote the tourism sector.

“Time has come that we, Malawians [should] start visiting our own tourism attraction centres. We have all the big animals and I was telling the tourism players that they should price their services so that Malawians and foreigners who are living in the country can afford,” Mussa said.
