Government, European Union sign K35 billion deals

Government on Monday signed two agreements for additional funding worth K34.8 billion with the European Union.

The additional funding will be channeled to the Social Support for Resilience Programme (Sosure) and the Afikepo Nutrition Programme.

Sosure will receive an additional allocation of 23 million Euros (about, K20.5 billion) bringing the total financing to 73 million Euros (about K65.2 billion).

On the other hand, the Afikepo Nutrition Programme will receive an additional allocation of 16 million Euros (aboutK14.3 billion) bringing total financing to 86 million Euros (about K76.8 billion).

Acting Ambassador and Head of Development Cooperation at the EU Delegation, Ivo Hoefkens, said the support measures are aimed at contributing to government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hoefkens said the support is part of a Team Europe approach which bundles the efforts of EU institutions and EU member states such as Germany and Ireland and the European Investment Bank.

“Together, these members of Team Europe have put together a 60 million Euro package of measures to support Malawi in addressing its short-term needs, as well as the longer-term structural impacts on society and the economy.

The overall objective of the Afikepo Programme is to contribute to the reduction of food and nutrition insecurity in 10 targeted districts of Malawi namely; Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Salima, Nkhotakota, Kasungu, Mzimba, Nkhata bay, Karonga and Chitipa.

Finance Minister, Felix Mlusu, said hailed the EU and its member states for making these resources available to the Government of Malawi to implement the programmes.
