HRCC queries police on Wame murder

Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has questioned police capacity and expertise in dealing with homicide cases following its failure to arrest the man who killed popular evangelist, ,in Salima a month ago.

HRCC Chairperson, Robert Mkwezalamba, said yesterday in an interview against a background that a young man who was staying with him is a main suspect.

“It is speaking to the capacity and credibility of our police. Certain incidents are going uncovered yet we are told we have the best trained officers unless many of them retired and we do not have specialists who can investigate such homicide cases. We have the Njauju murder and this one. We expect highly trained officers who can use all means to try and trace the suspects,” he said.

Mkwezalamba further urged government to invest more resources in the police to build capacity so that such delays can be minimised.

Over the weekend, social media was awash with reports that the suspect has been apprehended in Machinga District.

But in an interview on Sunday National Police Spokesperson, James Kadadzera, dismissed the reports and confirmed that the suspect is still at large.

“That is not true we have not arrested anyone but we are investigating the matter. Our officers are working tooth and nail to track the suspect. We are closing in on the suspect,” Kadadzera said adding that not many days will go without arresting the suspect.

Wame was found dead in his house with several stabs on his body and he is reported to have been murdered by his servant at his home in Takumana Location, Traditional Authority Kalonga in Salima.

Wame until his death was a popular evangelist and a member of the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) of the Nkhoma Synod.
