The postponement of this year’s annual lake festival, Lake of Stars (Los), will see the government losing out about $1 million in revenue.
Los organisers announced that they will not be holding the event this year and have already communicated to the government through the line ministry.
Confirming the development, Director of Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism, Isaac Katopola, said his office is aware of the postponement of the event this year.
He said the event attracts 3,000 festival goers every year of which 500 are international tourists.
He, however, was quick to point out that the absence of the festival this year, will give the government and other players time to review the organisation of the event.
Katopola said some of the areas that need to be reviewed include the need for Los to bring back the wow factor by bringing new artists of the moment and reduce repetition of old artists.
He also said there is a need to review benefits to local artists in terms of appearance fees.
“As the ministry responsible for tourism, it also gives us an opportunity to review our working relationship with Los as event organisers and true partners in the promotion of tourism in the country.
“The event also gives an opportunity to local upcoming event organisers to showcase and shine with their festivals,” Katopola said.
Katopola also said Los organisers, have promised to comeback in September 2018 for their 15th anniversary.
Commentators in the country have over the year’s said tourism is one untapped area that can turn around the country’s economic status.
Recent l y, t he German Ambassador, Jurgen Borsch, asked the government to take tourism as a priority during budget allocations because the sector has the potential to end economic challenges that the country faces year on year.
