Local Government Accountability Performance (LGAP) has handed over a K7 million market shed to Machinga District Council at Nsanama Market in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Nsanama.
LGAP representative, Francisco Zuze, said they are delighted to hand over the market shed, pledging continued support in various areas of development in the district.
“LGAP is currently implementing a project in eight districts of Machinga, Zomba, Mangochi, Nkhata Bay, Mulanje, Rumphi, Thyolo and Kasungu. This is continuation, as you may recall in 2019, LGAP supported Machinga District Council in the formulation of its District Development Plan and the Social Economic Profile,” Zuze said.
Machinga District Commissioner, Rosemary Nawasha, urged traders to continue paying market fees and appealed them to move into the market shed so that the council could maximise on its revenue collection.
“No person should be found selling commodities outside the market. The market fees are very important as they assist the local council in revenue collection which assists in performance of other functions,” she said.
Chairperson for Nsanama Market Committee, Smart Kataya, thanked LGAP for constructing the market shed assuring that the committee will make sure that the market is being properly managed.
He said the market would assist traders who were facing problems to trade previously due to scorching sun and rains.
“These conditions made us to start using the market shed even before it was formally handed over to the committee so we are very happy,” Kataya said.
