Malawi Boxing Association (Maba ) has advised its affiliates to self-sponsor regional championship set for the end of this month.
Maba was supposed to hold regional championships last week, but they were postponed due to logistical hitches.
Apparently, the association has made it clear that it cannot fund regional championships meant to select boxers for a national championship early March.
About K1.5 million is needed for the exercise with each region requiring K500,000.
Maba general secretary, Innocent Chakudza, said it was the duty of regional committees to source funding for the championships.
“We have given them enough time to cour t the corporate world. They need to find money to pay ringside officials’ allowances,” he said.
Chakudza said Maba will meet expenses for the national championship.
Meanwhile, Chakudza said the regional and national championships were
important as Maba plans to identify boxers earmarked for Olympic Games qualifying tournament set for Angola.
“We have been idle on the international scene for so long. We haven’t been involved in the international bouts since our participation in Zone VI Games in Zambia in 2012. We hope our affiliates will utilise this chance so that we should compete at Olympics Games,” he said.
Chakudza said they would select their squad basing on factors such as funding and performance.
“It is our wish to take every outstanding boxer. However, due to lack of funding we will be forced to limit our selection. As of now, we are waiting for Malawi Olympic Committee to advise us on the tentative number of boxers likely to travel to Brazil for Olympic Games,” he said.
