Market opens up for Malawi honey

Malawi will soon increase its honey exports into the Japanese market following a pledge by the Japanese Government to help Malawi establish proper channels that will make it easy for farmers to export honey into the Asian country.

Malawi currently exports its honey to Japan through the One Village One Product initiative. But a delegation of Members of House of Councilors from Japan, who are on a tour in the country, have indicated that a wider market is still available for Malawi to exploit.

Leader of the delegation, Masahiso Sato, said his government is impressed with how Malawians are benefiting from various Japanese funded projects being implemented through various channels such as Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).

“We are happy that despite using local resources, the farmers are able to produce honey of high quality which can fetch a lot of money on international markets. This has compelled us to partly shift the direction of our technical assistance such that we will start assisting local producers to find markets for their products,” he said.

Masahiso said while a 350 grammes bottle of honey is being sold for K1,200 locally, the same product can fetch an equivalent of between K20,000 and K30,000 elsewhere and in the process increasing earnings for farmers.

Liaison Officer in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shadreck Mangwilo, said his office will engage local honey producers to capitalise on the goodwill which the Japanese Government has extended to Malawi.

He acknowledged local producers have not been able to satisfy the available international market and in the process failing to generate more foreign exchange.
