Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel on Friday clocked 50 years of existence since it was established on April 19 1969.
The four-star rated hotel was opened by former president Hastings Kamuzu Banda with 70 rooms which have now been increased to 130.
Sunbird Chief Executive Officer, Yusuf Olela, said Sunbird Mount Soche has successfully hosted a number of high-profile events and global icons, including Nelson Mandela, who stayed at the hotel during the 2004 Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) meetings.
“The hotel has conference facilities and three boardrooms available for meetings, conference and banqueting events. Sunbird Mount Soche is rich in both setting and facilities as a city hotel.
“The hotel boasts a first class restaurant, two newly refurbished modern bars namely Sportsman’s bar and Pablo’s Lounge bar, a swimming pool and modern wellness centre with gym and Spa,” Olela said.
He said, over the years, the hotel has transformed itself to continuously provide excellent services with the intention of meeting guest expectations and increasing stakeholders’ value.
“At this new dawn and juncture of its history, Sunbird Mount Soche, being the second largest hotel within the group, continues to reposition itself to remain the preferred business hotel in the country. This year, Sunbird Mount Soche will unveil its 500+ seater state-of-the-art conference centre, befitting international standards and enhancing the conference experience.
