The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Alliance on Trade Facilitation (Gaft) to improve work of clearing and forwarding agents in the country.

Among other things, in the MoU, Gaft will be training clearing and forwarding agents.

Gaft Director General, Phillippe Isler, said there is need for the government and clearing agents to appreciate each other’s interests and expectations.

“In many countries, relationships between government and the private sector can be difficult because the two sides have different interests. But if you can bring government and private sector to work together, it can be for the benefit of everyone.

“Clearing and Forwarding agents facilitate international trade. If you are able to facilitate trade, you will boost trade and it turn improve the economy,” he said.

Isler said Gaft will work with the government and private sector to improve their working relationship.

MRA’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma hailed the pact, saying it will facilitate good working relationship between the government and Clearing and Forwarding Agents.
