Task Team Leader for Masaf 4 Project, Colin Andrews, has hailed Blantyre-based Mtikita Comsip Cooperative Society Limited for bringing socio-economic changes in the community.

Andrews, who was accompanied by Peter Porjarski, as part of the World Bank team assigned to assess performance of the Masaf 4 Project, said they are satisfied that Comsip groups like Mtikita are improving peoples livelihoods.

Mtikita Comsip—which is located in Mwangata Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Somba in Blantyre—is one of the savings and lending groups formed out of Public Works Programme in 2010.

The group with membership of 40, among them 36 women and six men, started with 81,000 savings but six years later the group ventured into the production business of piggery. The business is said to have boosted its savings to over K2.8 million. In addition, members have also established their own businesses.

“What stands out here at Mtikita is the Comsip’s support of providing people with an opportunity to make their choices on business categories and provide them with support. I am impressed with the success stories from the community and especially that more women are participating,” said Andrews.

He then assured the community that the bank will continue to bankroll the project that started in 2014 and ends in 2019.

Director of Operations for Local Development Fund (LDF) Paul Chipeta said Masaf 4 Project is funded to the tune of $177 million with three components; Public Works Programme, Social Cash Transfer and Livelihoods and Skills Development which is Comsip.

According to Comsip Operations Manager, Susan Kondowe, there are 262 registered cooperative groups with membership of about 128,000.
