The Nacala Logistics Corridor will be officially inaugurated on Friday this week, giving hope to the country of stimulating socio-economic development through the transportation of coal, general cargo and passengers.

Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, is expected to attend the event scheduled for Mkwinda Campsite in Zalewa.

The Nacala Logistics Corridor is an investment by Vale, Mitsui and CFM which comprises a new 136-kilometre railway from Kachaso to Nkaya, and a rehabilitated 99- kilometre railway from Nkaya to Nayuchi Border.

This is part of an integrated logistics corridor in Malawi and Mozambique comprising 912-kilometre railway connecting Tete, Moatize Coal Mine through Malawi to Port Nacala-à-Velha Multi-User Terminal.

Being landlocked, Malawi is ranked among countries with the highest transportation costs in the world. This makes it expensive both to import and export commodities.

For Malawi , the Nacala Corridor provides short access to the sea. The corridor stretches from Chipata, Zambia passing through Liwonde in Malawi to the Indian Ocean port of Nacala.

Nacala Por t is currently ranked third among Mozambican ports in cargo and container handling after Maputo and Beira. However, with a depth of 14 metres, Nacala Port is the best natural harbour in southeastern Africa and has high potential.

Currently, the port serves as a pivotal port for exports and imports in northern Mozambique.
