The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) says it plans to construct a K98 million office complex in Lilongwe.
NCIC Chief Executive Officer, Linda Phiri, said the complex will be built with sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.
Phiri was speaking in Lilongwe during the signing of the consultancy services contract with Image Designers, the architects of the project.
“Image Designs will be responsible for the effective incorporation all other assonated works, inducing quantity surveying, structure and civil engineering and mechanical and electoral engineering and contract is for the sum of K98,052810 will be paid from the councils own resources,” Phiri said.
Image Designs Team Leader, Architect Collins Kaunda, said their role is to design the building and give NCIC office complex a new look and a new concept of Green Building that operates to eliminate negative environmental impacts.
He said Green buildings concept offer solutions that create positive impacts on the natural environment and elements that will be used to make the NCIC new office building, include, use of renewable energy solutions such as solar in the buildings.
“Use of non-toxic building materials when building, consideration of environmental good aspects at design, and construction would help the office complex buildings to adaptation to changing environment,” Kaunda said
In 2018, the government published in the Gazette the use of sustainable construction. These regulations seek to promote the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly construction materials in the construction industry.
The regulations require that every public or commercial project be executed using approved, energy efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly construction materials and technologies in all the phases of the project as appropriate and completely banned use of traditionally fire cured bricks.
The regulations also require city, town and district councils to approve only such projects that specify and utilize construction materials that are sustainable, environmentally friendly and energy efficient.
