NGO for concerted effort to boost agri

Global humanitarian organisation, Care has urged world leaders and stakeholders to consider prioritising agriculture financing and deploy efforts to mitigate climate change effects.

The call was made on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Spain.

Care Advocacy Partnerships Coordinator for Southern Africa, Vitumbiko Chinoko it is high time leaders discuss ways of working together in addressing challenges facing the sector globally.

“It is high time constituted bodies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate realise that having specific funding for agriculture could reduce impact of climate change” Chinoko said.

He said although the Green Climate Fund has started working on the agriculture strategies, world leaders should consider coming up with solutions to challenges facing the industry.

In a separate interview, Adaptation Fund Senior Climate Change Specialist, Mahamat Assouyouti, urged countries to put project proposals to qualify for funding.

“Green climate fund is aimed to turn country ambitions into climate action based on determined national contributions intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions” Assouyouti said.

It was observed that fund for the green climate initiative has dwindled from $42 billion to $38 billion, a situation that has bothered some least developed countries.

A recent Sadc report show that about 41 million people in the in the region faces hunger due to weather related shocks and climate change effects.
