Power interconnection could be attained 2018

The millennium Challenge Account – Malawi (MCA) has said Malawi could interconnect its power grid with neighbouring countries by 2018 when the Compact Project it is implementing would have been completed.

MCA-M director of infrastructure development, Felix Nkhoma, said the completion of the project will pave way for interconnection with Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

Nkhoma disclosed this during site visits for potential contractors at Chintheche, Luwinga and New Bwengu substations situated in Nkhatabay, Mzuzu City and Mzimba respectively.

Nkhoma said the development implies that shortage in power supply and blackouts will be history and the problem of power in the country will be improved because of availability of so many sources of electricity.

“In future, there are plans that Malawi is going to be connected to Zambia via Chipata and then Phombeya through Nkhoma substation. This is where the 400KV inter-connector from Mozambique is going to land. And from here Bwengu all the way to Songwe, we will be able to Interconnect with Tanzania,” said Nkhoma
