By Imam Wali:

Roads Fund Administration (RFA) has said they will establish tentative tollgates at Chingeni in Ntcheu before June this year in readiness to the planned toll plaza to be constructed in the area.

In an interview RFA Procurement and Public Relations Officer, Masauko Mngwaluko, further said construction of the toll plaza is expected to commence, latest, in the first quarter of the 2020/21 financial year.

He said currently they are at an advanced stage with procurement processes.

“We are currently in the process of procuring contractors and consultants to be engaged in the construction of the tollgates but I can assure you that it will be completed soon and before the end of the current financial year we would have finished the procurement processes so that the works can start.

“Meanwhile we want to put up some small tollgates and start collecting funds at Chingeni,” Ngwaluko said.

He added that the tollgate is expected to increase the parastatals revenue collections by 15 percent collecting within the ranges of K5.4 billion to K10.8 billion annually.

He said the funds will be used for maintenance and rehabilitation of the country’s roads.

A local truck driver, Chapola Kaisi, said the development is welcome but could be expensive for local motorists who pass the proposed site frequently.

“We are always paying on the road when we drive outside Malawi and it is a good thing that foreign drivers should also be paying when they are on our roads however for local motorist it might be a burden.

“This money should really be used for the intended purpose and not channeled to account number one so that politicians should exploit it,” Kaisi said.

Malawi remains the only country without tollgates in the SADC region.

The Ministry of Transport revealed plans to establish tollgates in Malawi in 2015 but no concrete action was taken on the same.
