Schools get 6,000 trees seedlings

Airtel Malawi has responded to the call by the Ministry of Education by donating 6 000 tree seedlings to help the ministry’s exercise to plant at least 2 million trees in all the primary schools in the country.

The idea was hatched following the blowing off of roofs in about 420 schools in the country this year due to storms, according to Principal Secretary in the Ministry, responsible for Basic Education, Thokozire Banda.

Airtel Malawi symbolically handed over the tree seedlings at Phungu Primary School in Lilongwe where the company’s Head of Regulatory Affairs, Wilson Kyumba presented the donation to Banda.

“We are committed, as a company, to helping in the area of environment through our involvement in tree planting and we hope this donation will significantly help in this cause,” said Kyumba.

He said his company is serious about environmental issues to the point that about 25 percent of its towers use solar power.

According to Banda, the ministry found that lack of trees contributed to the roof damages by winds and heavy rains.
