The commencement of diamond core drilling of rare earth elements at Songwe Hill in Phalombe by Mkango Resources has attracted over 50 mining experts and investors.

The experts and investors have come from Canada, Britain, Germany, South Africa, Namibia and Malawi.

Diamond core drilling is used in the mining industry to probe the contents of known ore deposits and potential sites.

By withdrawing a small diameter core of rock from the ore body, geologists can analyse the core by chemical assay and conduct petrologic, structural and mineralogical studies of the rock.

The team is currently monito ring the works at Songwe.

The drilling programme is a key component of the feasibility study for Songwe, which is being fully funded by Talaxis Limited, a subsidiary of Noble Group Ltd.

Talaxis, a major investor of the project, would invest a further £7 million in funding completion of the feasibility study.

The investors and geologists started flying into the country last week to witness the commencement of the drilling which started on June 2.

The investors want to put their weight onto the project and motivate employees that they are behind the whole activity up to completion.

So far two drill rigs are operating.

The first exploration drilling at Songwe Hill took place from 2011 to 2012.
