The Takulandirani 2017 Malawi International Tourism Expo begins today at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

The three-day expo will be held under the theme, ‘Showcasing the Real African Experience’.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa, said the Expo has attracted over 70 exhibitors from South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the host Malawi.

“The exhibitors are scheduled to showcase various tourism-related products. The Expo has also attracted 30 regional, international buyers and media,” he said, adding that more than 1,000 delegates are in attendance.

Mussa said the hosting of the Expo has provided international and regional buyers, an opportunity to get in-depth product knowledge of the tourism products Malawi is endowed with as a tourist destination.

“The event will put Malawi on the map as we strive to take tourism to another level in terms of contributing towards the country’s economic growth,” he said.

He added that, the Minister of Tourism and Foreign Affairs from South Africa will attend the Expo as special guests.

“The two ministers will also sign an agreement between Malawi and South Africa on cooperation in the field of tourism. The agreement will help link Malawi to tourist destination areas in South Africa with an aim of creating a tourism package for tourists that travel to the two countries,” Mussa said.

The main objective of the Expo is to provide a platform for those expected to participate at the fair such as international and regional buyers, exhibitors, media, tourism authorities and ministries responsible for tourism, the academia and the general travelling public to interface and experience first-hand Malawi’s tourism products and share best practices on how to network and package Malawi’s tourism products for increased returns.
