EMPOWERED—Women in tea industry

The Tea Association of Malawi (Taml) has said the country has the capacity to improve the crop’s competitiveness and profitability and further grow its input to the economy.

Taml chairperson, Sangwani Hara, said this recently at the third annual International Women’s Day commemoration where he also applauded the role of women in the production chain.

He said the sector is still delivering better quality tea and sustaining living wages and living incomes while maintaining a conducive working environment for all, regardless of gender.

Hara said it is evident that the drive is bearing tangible fruits in improving the sector’s contribution to the economy.

“The tea industry is cognisant of the fact that the advancement of Malawi’s economy is not possible without the participation of women,” Hara said.

He said the aspirations are in line with the association’s Gender Policy and the Malawi Tea 2020 Revitalisation policies.

Hara said advancing equality in the sector would entail sustainable growth in both value and volume.

Chief Director in the Ministry of Gender, James Ali, hailed players in the tea sector for what he called tireless efforts in ensuring equality.

He said the sector has the capacity to improve its share of contribution to the national economy, hence, the need for concerted efforts.

“We are pleased with strides made in empowering women in the sector. The future looks bright,” he said.

Through the Malawi Tea 2020 Revitalisation initiative, the country saw an across-the-board wage increase of 11.29 percent for 208/19, plus a further 5 percent increase for 2019/20 with inflation rate estimated at 8.7 percent.

The percentage increase translates to $1.90 from $1.71
