Malawi stock Exchange listed mobile phone network provider, TNM, on Friday commissioned a new network tower at Kunenekude in Mwanza connecting people of the area to the rest of the country through its mobile network.
TNM Head of Blantyre Region, David Nyirenda, said the commissioning of the network tower reaffirms the company’s commitment towards the provision of reliable network in rural areas.
“For a long time, Kunenekude never had any network coverage. The few who had handsets could only use them when they travelled to Mwanza Boma.
TNM believes that this new tower will contribute towards easy and reliable access to communication,” Nyirenda said.
Nyirenda further said access to quality network services in mobile communication is a catalyst to economic development in Malawi.
“For small businesses to thrive, they need high quality and dependable mobile network complete with data capabilities and that is what we are offering through the additional sites,” he said.
Nyirenda also noted that as a highly agricultural area, the new network coverage would benefit farmers by linking them to lucrative markets to ensure they get good returns.
Member of Parliament for Mwanza Central, Davis Katsonga, hailed TNM for connecting the people of Kunenekude.
“The coming of this network will help boost business in this area. This is the bread basket of the southern region as it produces a number of crops such as Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and many others,” said Katsonga.
Among other expansion initiatives, TNM recently launched 27 new network sites in the lakeshore districts of Salima and Mangochi as one way of contributing to growth of the country’s tourism sector
