TNM in ‘grow green’ initiative

Premier mobile network and ICT provider TNM has joined Malawi’s National Tree Planting Season, pledging to do more for environmental conservation and protection starting with an employee-driven tree planting exercise across the country.

Themed “Grow Green”, the initiative will run through the rest of the year and will involve TNM employees taking the lead in demonstrating sustainable and responsible living, including taking care of their external environment by planting of trees in their homes and communities.

Chief Officer–Commercial, Daniel Makata, said during the 2017 season, TNM employees in the three regions will further join hands with government and communities to plant over 21,000 trees in six districts within Southern, Central and Northern regions of the country. This represents 1, 000 trees for every one of the 21 years that TNM has been operational.

“We are launching a long-term drive towards restoring the environment and striving for ecological balance by planting trees, and collaborating with communities and environment stakeholders to manage the trees after planting. Our goal is to secure a green future for our company, and that of the entire nation,” he said.

Makata said that the “Grow Green” initiative is in line with the TNM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillar of striving to create a sustainable work place and community.

“We realise that planting trees is the beginning of a long-term process towards environmental restoration. As TNM, we plan to do more than just plant trees. We would like to take a holistic approach to natural resources management,” he said.

The tree-planting exercise— which will run through the last two weeks of February— started off with Balaka and Machinga, Ndirande in Blantyre, Mikolongwe in Chirazulu, Dedza Hills and Lusangazi Forest in Mzuzu.
