World Bank calls for resourcefulness

The World Bank has urged journalists to be resourceful and develop an interest in generating stories from published reports.

The appeal was made by World Bank Group Communications Officer for Malawi Zeria Banda during a two-day media orientation workshop for journalists from the Southern Region held in Blantyre.

“As World Bank Group, we periodically release reports that are also posted on our website that we believe have vital information to generate your stories from. But what we see among most journalists is either laziness to take time and read them or lack of interest.

But I can assure you these reports can help you with relevant context and analysis,” she said.

The 20 journalists that attended the workshop also underwent the Project Cycle session to ensure that they play their oversight role to promote transparency and accountability.

Banda, then, encouraged the media to write stories on the positive impacts of World Bank projects to inspire more beneficiaries.

“Our goal is to end extreme poverty by addressing high levels of poverty and boost shared prosperity. We [World Bank] are hopeful that come 2030, extreme poverty will have been reduced to less than three percent,” she disclosed.

One of the participants, Earlene Chimoyo, described the training as an eye opener.

“Despite the World Bank opening up to the media through free flow of information accessible on their websites, there is still a need for more physical interaction with the media.

“Next time, they should consider bringing at least one specialist like an economist to also make a presentation,” Chimoyo said.
