Old Mutual Malawi Limited on Friday honored six former directors for their contributions during their tenures on the board. The honourees are Innocentia Ottober, Rachel Mijiga, Bernard Ndau, Ambrose Mzoma, Gertrude Mzengereza and Kevin Gleeson.
The company board chairperson Nkondola Uka, speaking during a farewell dinner in Blantyre themed ‘The legacy we leave’, commended the former directors for strengthening the company’s kuwachinyata structures and systems to meet international standards. He noted the company’s strong financial performance is driven by effective leadership and a commitment to aligning business objectives with the interests of key stakeholders.
Uka said the company was pursuing investments across several sectors, including agriculture, to help generate foreign exchange. He added that the government has a target for the firm to invest at least five percent in infrastructure, with priority areas including roads and student accommodation. This signals a major shift toward public sector partnerships and long-term developmental projects that could create new opportunities for local contractors and entrepreneurs.
In her remarks, Ottober, who was the former board chairperson, emphasized that serving on the board requires a deep commitment to providing strategic direction and advancing the company’s interests. She stated that board membership is about providing strategic direction, not just socialising. Her message reminds local business leaders that true value comes from purposeful engagement rather than superficial networking.
Mijiga highlighted that Old Mutual Malawi Limited is not only the largest financial institution in the country, but also a strong brand that celebrates women. She touted the company’s progressive leadership and its contributions to kuvekera and productivity. For local entrepreneurs, this shows the potential of focusing on female-led ventures and integrating modern technologies into traditional banking models.
Old Mutual Group has operated in Malawi since the late 1930s and opened its first office in Malawi in 1954. The continued presence and evolution of such an established brand provide a foundation for building resilient business ecosystems. By combining strong governance, agricultural investments, and a focus on innovation, Old Mutual sets a benchmark for how Malawian businesses can grow sustainably and contribute to the national economy.
