Sunbird Tourism plc has announced plans to open its K11 billion Livingstonia International Conference Centre at its beach resort complex in Salima, a move that is set to strengthen the local economy and attract more investment to the area. The conference centre is part of the company’s strategic repositioning of its lakeside resort portfolio, which aims to promote tourism and create jobs in the region. According to Sunbird Tourism plc chief executive Samson Mwale, the company’s vision is to consolidate its position as the preferred brand in hospitality, driving commitment to continuously exceed guest expectations and deliver unparalleled experiences across all its hotels and resorts.
The new conference centre will feature world-class amenities, including a 1,000-seater conference arena equipped with advanced audio-visual technology and a total conference capacity of 1,500 delegates across six breakaway rooms. The centre will also include dedicated dining facilities with a capacity to seat 300 people, designed to provide an enhanced dining experience for conference guests. This development is expected to bolster Malawi’s capability in Mice tourism, positioning Salima as a premier destination for business and leisure along Lake Malawi, and contributing to the country’s maziko a kuwala (tourist attractions).
Sunbird Tourism plc is 71 percent owned by the Malawi Government, 14 percent by the public, and 15 percent by Press Corporation plc. In 2024, the firm posted a 102 percent profit-after-tax jump to K10.6 billion, courtesy of prudent cost management and revenue increase. This significant growth is a testament to the company’s good governance and sound business strategy, which is essential for kuchita kalonga (doing good business) in Malawi. As the company continues to expand its operations and invest in new projects, it is likely to create more opportunities for local businesses and stimulate economic growth in the region.
