Malawi urged to diversify capital markets products

Creating New Opportunities: Malawi Urged to Enrich Capital Market Offerings

Post was last updated: October 13, 2026

Key Business Points

  • Expand investment products: The market needs more than stocks so ordinary citizens can grow their ndalama through diverse tools.
  • Teach financial literacy: Educating retail clients helps people outside major cities access investment opportunities safely.
  • Close the funding gap: Better financing is needed to cover the K1.7 trillion annual infrastructure deficit.

Investment and market analysts have urged Malawi to broaden its capital market offerings if the nation hopes to mobilize domestic savings and fund business growth. Small and medium enterprises stand to benefit most from this wider range of financing channels. The advice was delivered on Thursday in Blantyre during the Chartered Financial Analyst Charterholder Recognition event. This gathering celebrated three local investment experts who earned a globally respected designation.

Emmanuel Chokani, chief executive of Bridgepath Capital Limited, argued that expanding investment options is vital for the economy. He stated that deepening the market means giving more Malawians chances to build wealth. Chokani, who serves on the CFA Society South Africa Malawi Chapter committee, emphasized that reaching retail clients requires patience and better financial literacy. He explained that complex financial concepts must be translated for the everyday Malawian. He called for more products, more options, and improved accessibility for residents living outside major financial centers.

Loyiso Kula, chief executive of the CFA Society South Africa, echoed this sentiment. He urged the country to move beyond simple stock exchange trading. Such innovation is key to keeping local capital from leaving the country for foreign markets. Introducing new financial tools such as investment funds would give investors more choices to manage risk and secure better returns for their capital.

These comments also reflect concerns outlined in the Malawi Capital Markets Development Plan (2021-2025). The plan identifies underdeveloped markets, a scarcity of securities, high transaction costs, and macroeconomic instability as major obstacles to affordable long-term financing. This approach is particularly important for small business owners who often struggle to secure bank credit. It adds that addressing the infrastructure deficit alone requires nearly $1 billion, roughly K1.7 trillion, annually between 2020 and 2030. Broadening investment products can channel domestic savings into productive activities, complement bank lending, and support Malawi 2063. The ambition aims to build a wealthy, self-reliant, and industrialized upper-middle-income economy.

Among the awardees, Shane Rebello of Continental Asset Management said the charter strengthened his technical knowledge. He believes this helps professionals analyze existing investments and introduce suitable products to the developing market. Peter Chikunkhuzeni of Bridgepath Capital said attaining the designation deepened his understanding of the economic landscape. Chisomo Chokani Chimkoola, a risk manager at Standard Bank plc, completed the honored group.

For local entrepreneurs, the message is clear. When capital markets offer variety, it becomes easier to find funding for expansion without relying solely on bank loans. Investors gain safe places to park money that yields better returns than standard savings accounts. Local traders and farmers must understand these options to protect their own income from inflation. Malawi 2063 depends on this shift from borrowing to investing within the country. Business owners should watch for new offerings and ask their brokers how to participate. Building a culture of saving and investing (kusunga ndalama) now lays the foundation for a stronger economy. The path to upper-middle-income status runs through the homes of ordinary citizens who decide to invest wisely today.
