Grants, Growth, and Green Gains: Transforming Malawi’s Agricultural Sector Through Sustainable Energy
Key Business Points
- Up to $300,000 (€520 million) in matching grants now available for Malawian businesses driving clean energy innovations in agriculture
- Technical assistance of up to $35,000 offered to help companies scale green, energy-smart solutions
- Window 3 targets private sector players improving agricultural productivity while promoting environmental sustainability
The Green Economic Transition Facility (GETF) has unveiled its third funding window, presenting a significant opportunity for local businesses to accelerate clean energy innovation across Malawi’s agricultural value chains. This initiative, managed by the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with Landell Mills International, is backed by key development partners including the Embassy of Ireland, German Development Cooperation through KfW Development Bank, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
Window 3 specifically targets private sector players who can submit innovative solutions that advance energy-smart technologies for agricultural transformation. With matching grants ranging from $40,000 to $300,000, and on-demand technical assistance of up to $35,000, enterprises have access to a potential $335,000 (approximately K586.6 million) per project to scale viable green innovations.
Ambassador Annie Sofie Bjelland of the Royal Norwegian Embassy emphasized that such instruments demonstrate the critical importance of strong partnerships among governments, development institutions, and the private sector in catalyzing innovative solutions that address climate change challenges while strengthening economic development. "By providing matching grants of up to $300,000, together with tailored technical assistance of up to $35,000, the facility helps reduce investment risks and enables enterprises to scale innovative green energy agriculture business models that generate measurable environmental and social benefits," she explained.
The initiative arrives at a crucial time when Malawi is working to build a climate-resilient economy while strengthening food systems and creating new economic opportunities. Beyond environmental benefits, investments in green enterprises, the Ambassador noted, have the potential to create meaningful economic opportunities for young people, women, and rural communities—active agents for transformation in Malawi’s agricultural landscape.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Chika Charles Aniekwe highlighted that Window 3 marks another important milestone in Malawi’s journey toward building a green, resilient, and inclusive economy. "This new window focuses specifically on accelerating energy-smart solutions for agricultural transformation. These solutions have the potential not only to increase agricultural productivity but also to reduce emissions, lower production costs, strengthen food systems, and create new economic opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs alike," he said.
The initiative aligns closely with Malawi’s broader development ambitions under Vision 2063, which calls for transforming the country into a productive and industrialized middle-income economy. Achieving these aspirations requires moving beyond primary production toward value addition, innovation, and resilient agricultural systems—areas where private sector participation proves essential.
GETF’s success demonstrates its effectiveness in mobilizing green finance. To date, the facility has helped bring 25 innovative green products to the market, created over 220 jobs, and enabled more than 62,000 low-income consumers to access green products and services that improve their daily lives. With the annual commitment of $1.9 million from supporting partners, the program continues to strengthen Malawi’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The call is now open to entrepreneurs, innovators, and private sector leaders to submit strong proposals that demonstrate both environmental impact and commercial sustainability. This window represents not just funding opportunity but a chance to position businesses at the forefront of Malawi’s green economic transformation.
