This change shortens the time required to obtain a licence from two weeks to just three days. Chikhasu explained that previously firms had to travel to several departments, often waiting in long queues and sometimes losing paperwork. With the new platform, applicants upload their documents once and receive a decision online, which speeds up the process and reduces administrative costs. Barry Mkorongo, an accountant at IQRTM/Innscor Distribution Limited, noted that the system saves time and money. He said that the previous requirement to visit multiple offices caused delays and occasional loss of documents, but now permits are issued within two to three days. The National Single Window functions as a one stop shop for all required approvals, including certificates, licences and permits for international trade. By consolidating these services, the government aims to improve the ease of doing business, attract more foreign investment, and support local entrepreneurs. The initiative is expected to boost economic growth by making Malawi more competitive in regional markets. It also aligns with the country’s goal of enhancing the investment climate and reducing corruption in public services. Business owners can access the portal through the ministry’s website, where they will find step by step instructions and customer support. Training sessions have been held in Blantyre to familiarise commercial entities with the new process. As the system matures, officials anticipate further reductions in processing times and increased transparency. The Mphika of trade is becoming more efficient, offering a modern marketplace for Malawian exporters and importers alike. By streamlining procedures, the government hopes to encourage more small and medium sized enterprises to engage in cross border trade, thereby creating jobs and stimulating local economies.
