TNM plc, the Malawi Stock Exchange‑listed telecommunications group, released its unaudited interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2026. The profit after tax climbed to K12.22 billion, up from K7.97 billion in the same period of 2025. This increase was driven by better operating performance and lower financing costs, according to the company’s financial statement.
Total revenue and other income rose 32% to K128.52 billion, compared with K97.44 billion a year earlier. All major revenue streams grew during the period. Voice revenue reached K30.11 billion, a 23% increase from K24.46 billion, supported by a 12% rise in subscriber numbers. Data revenue grew to K48 billion, up 41% from K34.14 billion, reflecting a 45% jump in data traffic as more customers use smartphones and mobile broadband. Mobile money revenue surged to K30 billion, a 45% rise from K20.64 billion, while transaction values climbed 36%, indicating deeper usage of the service for payments, transfers and savings.
In a joint statement, CEO Michel Hebert, Board Chairperson Ted Sauti Phiri and Audit Committee Chairperson Frank Dalitso Chozenga highlighted that the results demonstrate the resilience of TNM’s business model and the payoff from continued investments in network quality, digital services and operational efficiency. They said, “The board is pleased with the group’s strong performance during the first half of 2026, which reflects sustained growth across our core business segments and the effectiveness of our strategic initiatives.”
The board also approved a first interim dividend of K5.19 billion, equivalent to 45 tambala per share, for the financial year ending 31 December 2026. The dividend will be paid on 16 October to shareholders whose names appear on the register at the close of business on 2 October.
For Malawi’s business community, the TNM results underline several opportunities. The strong growth in mobile money and data signals rising demand for digital financial services and internet connectivity, encouraging entrepreneurs to develop apps, e‑commerce platforms and fintech solutions that leverage the expanding user base. The increase in subscriber count shows that market penetration can still be improved, offering room for new entrants or existing players to target underserved areas with affordable voice and data packages. The declared dividend reflects the company’s confidence in generating steady cash flow, which may attract local and foreign investors looking for reliable returns in the telecom sector.
Overall, TNM’s half‑year performance points to a vibrant telecommunications market that supports broader economic growth. Business owners can consider partnering with the operator to access its distribution network, use mobile money for payments, or tap into the growing data traffic for digital marketing and service delivery. As the company continues to invest in infrastructure, the outlook for Malawi’s digital economy remains positive, offering concrete avenues for innovation and expansion. Investors and entrepreneurs should track policy shifts, explore TNM partnerships, and use mobile money data to tailor products for underserved markets across Malawi’s dynamic growing economy.
