AI Driven Growth for Malawi’s SMEs
Key Business Points
- Adopt AI tools to digitise inventory and transactions now
- Partner with local trader groups to pilot the platform in 2026
- Use trusted digital records to unlock finance and growth
Nyirenda launched Afro Ubuntu TradeNet in the United Kingdom with a conviction that Africa’s small enterprises deserve better digital tools to compete in a technology driven economy. The company is now preparing to bring its innovation home where Malawi is expected to become a flagship market for a platform designed to help SMEs digitise daily operations and unlock new growth opportunities.
Nyirenda says the main challenge for many Malawian businesses is the reliance on manual record keeping and informal systems that make stock management, performance tracking, finance access and credit worthiness proof difficult. The platform she built offers inventory management, transaction recording, AI powered insights and the creation of Trusted Digital Records.
"The platform uses artificial intelligence to turn everyday business activity into practical insight that helps entrepreneurs make informed decisions," Nyirenda says. "It helps businesses monitor stock, identify trends, improve purchasing decisions and reduce shortages. Better information leads to better decisions greater productivity and stronger growth for SMEs."
Beyond daily operations the system creates digital records that can strengthen a business’s commercial profile when dealing with banks, development programmes and potential trading partners. This is especially valuable as African economies accelerate the shift toward digital commerce.
Nyirenda adds that Africa’s informal economy is estimated at over US$1.2 trillion and accounts for about 85 percent of employment across the continent. Malawi’s informal sector therefore offers a huge chance to improve productivity, strengthen trade and expand financial inclusion with digital technology.
"The greatest opportunity lies in reducing the everyday friction informal businesses face while preserving the flexibility that makes them resilient," she says.
Afro Ubuntu TradeNet has been engaging stakeholders across Malawi Zambia Zimbabwe Nigeria South Africa and Kenya but Malawi remains the focus of its long term vision. The Malawi High Commission in the UK has supported introductions to local stakeholders while discussions are underway with the Cross Border Traders Association Malawi to pilot the platform among its members.
If talks go well pilot activities could start in 2026 with twenty five to fifty SMEs including informal and cross border traders. The pilot will collect feedback measure impact and refine the solution before scaling to thousands of businesses.
The expected impact includes faster access to working capital for participating traders, reduced inventory loss, and stronger market linkages. Successful pilots could become a model for African nations and show how technology can cut the cost of doing business in Malawi.
The company’s work has also attracted international recognition. Recently Afro Ubuntu TradeNet was named a finalist in the UK Startup Awards 2026 under the Technology of the Year category. The accolade validates both the innovation behind the platform and its potential to create meaningful impact across Africa.
"Recognition internationally together with support from the University of South Wales Business Startup Studio strengthens our credibility as we engage investors institutions and development partners," Nyirenda says. "It shows that technology developed by African entrepreneurs can compete globally while solving challenges at home."
Looking ahead Nyirenda envisions Afro Ubuntu TradeNet evolving into a digital trade ecosystem that connects businesses with markets finance and opportunities across the continent. She believes empowering SMEs with technology is essential to unlocking the continent’s economic potential.
"Africa does not lack entrepreneurs it lacks digital infrastructure that lets those entrepreneurs reach their full potential," she says.
"Afro Ubuntu TradeNet exists to help build that infrastructure starting with SMEs and expanding across the region."
"Biznis eni achikondi mchitunda mwa pepere" Nyirenda adds in Chichewa a reminder that continuous innovation keeps a business thriving.
