Key Business Points

  • Corporate social responsibility initiatives like the donation of 40 desks worth K7 million by Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) under the Southern Region Chapter can have a significant impact on the local community and promote social and economic development.
  • Partnerships between businesses and educational institutions can help address infrastructure challenges and improve the quality of education, as seen in the case of Pirimiti Community Day Secondary School in Zomba.
  • Collective efforts by businesses, such as the SACCOs under Chapter 1, can contribute to uplifting communities and promoting world prosperity, as highlighted by the International Credit Union Day theme ‘Cooperation for World Prosperity’.

As part of the International Credit Union Day celebrations, Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) under the Southern Region Chapter, also known as Chapter 1 SACCO, donated 40 desks worth K7 million to Pirimiti Community Day Secondary School in Zomba. This gesture of goodwill was part of a global initiative by credit unions to promote social and economic development. According to Chapter 1 SACCO director Mphalulo Fatch, the donation was a collective effort by the SACCOs to give back to the community and improve the learning environment for students.

The headteacher of the school, Alfred Chasowa, described the donation as a major boost to the school, which has long struggled with a shortage of desks. The 40 desks will accommodate 80 learners and improve learning conditions for the school’s 350 learners. While the donation is a significant step forward, the school still requires more support to address its infrastructure challenges. As Chasowa noted, "more support is still needed" to improve the quality of education.

Chapter 1 SACCO comprises several SACCOs, including Mphunzitsi Sacco, Yathu Sacco, Mudi Sacco, Chilungamo Sacco, Polymed Sacco, Future Sacco, PCL Group Sacco, Sunbird Sacco, and Sucoma Sacco. These SACCOs are working together to make a positive impact on their community, demonstrating the power of zikomo (gratitude) and ubale (reciprocity) in Chichewa business culture. By giving back to the community, these SACCOs are not only promoting social responsibility but also contributing to the economic growth of the region. As the SACCOs continue to support local initiatives, they are likely to kukongola (strengthen) their relationships with the community and kugwira (build) a stronger, more prosperous future for all.
