- Support for local businesses: The airline urges the government to implement a policy supporting the use of Malawi Airlines by public servants, which can help promote local economic growth and kuongeza kwa biashara za ndani (increase domestic business).
- Expansion strategy: Malawi Airlines plans to expand its services, with the new route being a key part of this strategy, aiming to increase its competitiveness and kuzalisha mapato (generate revenue) in the long run.
Malawi Airlines has launched its new Lilongwe-Entebbe route, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s expansion plans. The new route will have four direct flights every week, with the first flight departing at 4:30 pm and taking approximately two-and-a-half hours. According to Malawi Airlines Chief Executive Officer Solomon Bekele Debay, the new route is expected to promote trade and tourism between Malawi and East Africa, particularly Uganda. Debay emphasized the importance of government support, urging public servants to utilize Malawi Airlines and calling for a deliberate policy to support the airline.
The new route will cater to Malawian traders and students in Uganda, as well as those traveling to connect to other countries in East Africa, such as Zambia and South Africa. Malawi Airlines already operates flights to Kenya and Tanzania, making Uganda the third country in East Africa to be serviced by the airline. Ukonge wa hewa (air transport) is a crucial aspect of facilitating trade and economic growth, and this new route is expected to play a significant role in this regard.
While the airline does not expect to make profits immediately, it is optimistic about the route’s potential, with bookings already in place. The company plans to focus on marketing the route and increasing its visibility to attract more customers. Malawi Airlines has a fleet of three aircraft, including Q400, 737-700, and 737-800, which will be utilized to service the new route. As the airline continues to expand its services, it is likely to increase its competitiveness in the regional market, providing more opportunities for biashara za ndani (domestic businesses) to grow and thrive.
