Key Business Points

  • Enhance export readiness: Malawian businesses must prioritize standardization to compete in global markets, as emphasized by MCCCI’s commitment to ensuring products meet international standards.
  • Foster partnerships and collaborations: Building relationships with investors and other businesses, like the recent visit from Mozambican investors, can lead to new trade and investment opportunities for Malawi’s agricultural sector.
  • Empower smallholder farmers: Supporting local farmers, especially women, is crucial for agro-processing and manufacturing growth, and initiatives like MCCCI’s efforts to provide access to markets, training, and investment opportunities can make a significant difference.

The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) recently facilitated a factory visit for a delegation of Mozambican investors at the National Smallholder Farmers Association of Malawi (NASFAM), a key player in Malawi’s agricultural sector. The visit aimed to provide the investors with a deeper understanding of Malawi’s manufacturing landscape and explore potential trade and investment opportunities. NASFAM showcased its diverse product portfolio, including Rice, Beans, Groundnuts, Sorghum, Soya porridge, and Chili, demonstrating its successful model of working with smallholder farmers to aggregate produce for value addition and supplying raw materials to manufacturing companies.

Strengthening Partnerships for Growth
The visit marked an important step in strengthening partnerships between Malawi and Mozambique, with potential benefits for both nations. NASFAM Chief Executive Officer Dr. Betty Chinyamunyamu expressed appreciation for MCCCI’s role in facilitating the engagement, highlighting the opportunity for collaboration in agro-processing and trade. The Mozambican delegation, which included representatives from various sectors, also participated in a private sector engagement luncheon meeting, further solidifying the potential for future partnerships.

Empowering Local Farmers
MCCCI’s Director of Membership Development, Wezi Mungoni, emphasized the significance of the visit in advancing Malawi’s export readiness. She stressed the importance of standardization in making Malawian products competitive in global markets and highlighted MCCCI’s dedication to supporting local farmers, particularly women entrepreneurs, by providing them with access to markets, training, and investment opportunities. This support is central to MCCCI’s mission, as smallholder farmers, especially women, play a vital role in agro-processing and manufacturing. By creating an enabling environment that fosters their growth and participation in regional trade, Malawi can unlock new opportunities for economic growth and development.
