Malawi’s economy is set to receive a boost with the announcement of a new solar power plant in Mzuzu, developed by Mzuzu University. The $20 million 20 megawatts plant is expected to start operating in mid-next year and will supply electricity to residents of Mzuzu and surrounding areas. According to Mzuzu Vice Chancellor Wales Singini, the power plant is a Strategic Command (Zimwani Zinamizinda) initiative aimed at creating a platform for students to have hands-on experience with available resources.
The Electricity Supply Corporation Malawi (Escom) has welcomed the investment, highlighting the need for Malawi to diversify its sources of power due to unpredictable weather conditions. Escom CEO Kamkwamba Kumwenda noted that the country’s reliance on hydro power has led to power supply issues during bad weather. The new solar power plant will provide consumers with an alternative source of power, reducing the country’s reliance on hydro power and promoting energy security.
Malawi’s installed generation capacity remains at 554.22 megawatts, which is below the recommended 1,000 megawatts. The current capacity comprises 401.8 megawatts of hydro, 101 megawatts of solar, and 51 megawatts of diesel power generation. However, this is not enough to supply electricity to all Malawians, with Escom still connecting new customers through initiatives such as the Malawi Electricity Access Project, which targets 180,000 households. The new solar power plant is a step in the right direction, providing a much-needed boost to Malawi’s energy sector and promoting economic growth and development.
