Phiri, on the other hand, earns around K100,000 per month, but both face challenges like limited access to markets and low production capacity due to manual production methods.
The Malawian economy is heavily reliant on charcoal and firewood, with over 97% of households using these unsustainable sources for cooking and heating. This has led to widespread deforestation, forest degradation, and downstream effects on water availability and hydropower generation. The National Charcoal Strategy promotes renewable energy alternatives like fire briquettes, which can offer a concentrated, cost-effective, and cleaner fuel. Youth Action for Success and Development Executive Director Edward Msiska believes that expanded briquette production can create jobs for the youth and reduce charcoal use, while also easing pressure on urban waste management systems.
The Ministry of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism is implementing initiatives to support small and medium enterprises, including capacity building and improved access to finance. The government is also encouraging youth to form cooperatives to access loans and ensure compliance with repayment.
