The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has officially launched a new management information system (MIS) aimed at transforming how businesses access certification, inspection, and testing services. According to MBS director general Symon Mandala, the update marks a major shift from outdated paper-based processes to an integrated digital platform.
Speaking at a media briefing in Blantyre, Mandala said the bureau has long struggled with inefficiencies due to fragmented records and manual handling. He noted that the new system, developed in partnership with Idias Corporation Limited, will allow clients to apply for services online, receive automatic alerts via SMS and email, and track their application status in real-time.
Mandala emphasized that streamlined processing will benefit both businesses and consumers. "With this system, goods will be inspected and cleared more quickly, reducing delays at ports and markets," he said. The platform also enables management to identify workflow bottlenecks and allocate resources more effectively.
Edwin Saidi, managing director of Idias Corporation Limited, described the system as a business-friendly tool designed to lower operational costs. "This platform simplifies how services are accessed, reducing paperwork and improving turnaround times," Saidi said, adding that faster compliance approvals help companies remain competitive.
The project is backed by the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project, a World Bank initiative supporting regional trade reforms. MBS hopes the system will not only enhance local service delivery but also position Malawi’s industries for smoother integration into cross-border supply chains.
For Malawi’s business community, this digital transformation means faster, more reliable service from the Bureau of Standards—a critical partner for companies seeking certification and market entry. Entrepreneurs and export-oriented firms stand to benefit most, with reduced wait times and fewer administrative hurdles lowering the cost of doing business.
