Key Business Points
- Low investment in agriculture is a significant risk to Malawi’s national food production capacity, highlighting the need for increased investment and a more coordinated approach to address the food systems crisis.
- Streamlined interventions and resource allocation are essential to improve the country’s agricultural productivity, and the government must prioritize productive sectors to stabilize food availability.
- Research and development of climate-resilient crop varieties and otechnologies are crucial to enhance agricultural production, and universities, investors, and the government must collaborate to leverage these opportunities.
Malawi’s business community is facing a critical challenge in the agricultural sector, which is essential to the country’s economic growth and food security. A recent national dialogue on food systems in Lilongwe brought together stakeholders to discuss the mounting food systems crisis in the country. The meeting highlighted the need for a more coordinated approach to address the lack of investment, fragmented interventions, and low resources in the agricultural sector.
According to Andrew Jamali, Research Manager at the National Planning Commission, the failure to scale innovations and technologies is a lost opportunity to develop production capacity. He emphasized that investors must take advantage of government programs and strategies, while universities must conduct research to develop climate-responsive crop varieties and livestock breeds. Jamali also stressed the need for the public sector to save resources through austerity measures and focus on productive sectors that can stabilize food availability.
The event was organized under the Food Systems Transformation in Southern Africa for One Health project, a regional research initiative that aims to make food systems healthier for both people and the planet. Elizabeth Namaona, Executive Director of the Civil Society Agriculture Network, said the event aimed to identify needed interventions, opportunities, and chart the way forward to improve funding, policy alignment, and other areas.
The government has committed to supporting the agenda, with Readwell Musopole, Deputy Director of Agricultural Planning Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, affirming the ministry’s commitment to addressing the food systems crisis. As malonda ndi mphamvu (agriculture is power) in Malawi, the business community must prioritize investment in the sector to drive economic growth and ensure food security. By kugwira ntchito patsogolo (working together), stakeholders can leverage opportunities, address challenges, and build a more resilient agricultural sector.
