Post was last updated: June 18, 2025

Key Business Points

  • Increase tobacco production: Malawi’s business community should focus on increasing tobacco production to meet the growing demand and generate substantial foreign currency.
  • Address structural issues: Businesses should work with the government to address structural and policy issues that limit productivity, such as market efficiency at auction floors.
  • Unlock industry potential: Companies should aim to unlock the tobacco industry’s potential by improving the policy framework and taking advantage of global market opportunities.

Malawi’s economy is facing a challenge in the tobacco industry, with the country struggling to meet the demand for the commodity. For over a decade, Malawi has been under-supplying the tobacco industry, resulting in missed income and foreign currency opportunities. Last year, the country fell short of meeting the 190 million kilogramme demand, supplying only 133 million kilogrammes. This year, the demand has increased by 12 percent to 213 million kilogrammes, and farmers are expected to undersupply again, with a projected output of 174.4 million kilogrammes.

To address this challenge, the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is championing a new growth strategy for tobacco production. Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale recently visited Limbe Leaf, the country’s oldest tobacco company, to engage with stakeholders and remove bottlenecks that limit productivity. The minister’s visit is a positive step towards increasing volumes of Malawi’s largest export commodity. Kawale acknowledged that there are structural and policy issues to be worked on, including market efficiency at auction floors, which is hindering productivity.

Limbe Leaf Board Chairperson Ronald Mangani highlighted the need to address policy issues to unlock the tobacco industry’s potential. The company is looking to increase productivity and maximize industrial benefits, taking advantage of global market opportunities. With a potential to provide jobs to close to 4,000 people at the peak of the season, companies like Limbe Leaf have a significant role to play in Malawi’s economic growth. As the government and businesses work together to address the challenges facing the tobacco industry, there are opportunities for local entrepreneurs to invest in the sector and benefit from the growth strategy. By improving the policy framework and increasing productivity, Malawi’s business community can capitalize on the growing demand for tobacco and contribute to the country’s economic development.
