The governments of Malawi and Zambia have taken a significant step towards improving trade relations by signing a Mutual Recognition Agreement on Conformity Assessment. This landmark agreement aims to enhance trade on agricultural produce, including maize, groundnuts, beans, rice, soybean, and sorghum, between the two neighboring countries. The agreement was signed by Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba and Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture Mtolo Phiri in Lusaka, marking a new era of cooperation and trust between the two nations.
The agreement ensures that commodities tested and certified in one country will be accepted in the other, reducing the need for redundant testing and certification processes. This streamlines trade and makes it easier for businesses to export goods between Malawi and Zambia. According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the agreement underscores the commitment of both governments to facilitate trade through mutual recognition of conformity assessment processes, promising new opportunities for farmers, traders, and consumers, and fostering economic growth.
Minister Mumba emphasized that the agreement is more than just trade facilitation; it’s about strengthening trust between national quality institutions, building mutual confidence in standards and regulatory frameworks, and laying a strong foundation for industrial growth, competitiveness, and consumer protection. He also noted that the agreement contributes to the aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aims to harmonize trade systems, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.
Malawi is expected to sign a similar agreement with Zimbabwe by the end of the year, further expanding trade opportunities in the region. This move is expected to boost local businesses, particularly in the agricultural sector, and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs to "kuthandiza bizinesi" or grow their businesses. As the country continues to "kulimbikitsa" or develop its economy, such agreements are crucial in promoting trade and investment, and ultimately, driving economic growth and development.
